Sage belongs to the genus Salvia of the family of Heilanthes. These are perennial and evergreen shrubs, used as aromatic, medicinal and bee plants. Sage honey has a yellow color and excellent aroma, and is produced in very small quantities and is rare to find.
In our country, 23 species grow naturally, the most important of which are S. officinalis, S. triloba (= S. fruticosa) and S. pomifera. The S. triloba (Greek sage) has large fluffy leaves, green in color and reaches a height of 80 cm. Its flowers are red-violet in color. The S. fruticosa (Cretan sage) has a higher height (reaches 1 meter) and leaves with silver ash color. In its essential oil S. fruticosa 1,8-cineole dominates, while that of S. triloba contains mainly α- and β-thujone.
The dried herb is used in the form of an infusion or decoction to treat inflammation of the mouth and throat, the common cold and gastrointestinal disorders. Traditionally, sage is used as a tonic, stimulant of the nervous system, gastric, diuretic and antitussive. In a recent study, an extract from S. triloba showed improving action against Alzheimer's in experiments with mice.
